Delaware
Township (Fishers)
Forty miles of
trails wind through Fishers, circling almost every community there and
typing the suburb together like a knot. Ride your bike down
those trails and you'll pass Mudsock park, where 12-year-olds play
football on fields that rival many high school facilities.
You'll wind past Connor Prairie, the hands-on history
attraction that grounds the past in this mostly shiny new burb.
And if you continue southeast, you'll see the spectacular
lakefront homes of Geist.
What you won't spot is a traditional downtown; right now three
old buildings near the railroad tracks and a new municipal complex make
up the heart of the town. And as a result, Fishers - a place
known for school sthat rank among the best in the state - is seeking a
center of gravity.
It probably won't have to look much longer. Given Fisher's
explosive growth (population has increased 73 percent since 2000), a
developer is planning a 40-acre piazza-like square that will include
retail and residential components, plus concert facilities and high-end
dining. The project is one in a series of upcoming
commericial ventures planned for Fishers, including a water park, a
shopping complex at 96th Street and a Allisonville Raod, and Clarian
and St. Vincent hospital facilities.
Listed in Money
magazine's top 25 "Best Places to Live in the United States" a couple
of years ago, the town is developing a reputation as the place in the
Indiana for families. And that designation is attracting some
empty-nesters, too.
