Noblesville Township

Noblesville is the sort of place where old constantly intersects with new, and the dichotomy is visible even on the historic courthhouse square, the city's showpiece.  One side of the 1879 French Renaissance-style courthouse looks out on 9th Street, where The Artist's Vineyard wine bar offers deep reds, crisp whites, and original paintings produced by local artists.  But on the Logan Street side of the square, Kirk's Hardware - the latest inhabitant of a store-front that has housed nothing but hardware stores for all of its 100-plus years - still sells nails by the pound.

At this crossroads, the suburbanites who commute to Indianapolis daily from Noblesville live side by side with lifelong residents who bristle at the suggestion that Noblesville is now a suburb.  Noblesville, goes the refrain, is its own place, not an outlying area of another.  Yet the explosive growth that has overtaken southern Hamilton County has also edged into its county seat, and Noblesville's population has increased by more that 50 percent since the 2000 U.S. Census.  Two years ago, a book about the country's most affordable cities named Noblesville one of the top 10 cities int eh United States to raise a family - an honor based on the area's standard of living, education, health and safety, lifestyle, and demographic breakdown.

If not for the courthouse, it might be easy to overlook that Noblesville is the hub of the county government; its aggressively growing intracounty siblings to the south - Carmel and Fishers - are far bigger.  But Noblesville manages to straddle the past and present from its perch on the outer reaches of metro Indianapolis, making it not just a reluctant suburb but an inviting place for both newcomers and old-timers.
